Changing a child's name

My girlfriend and I are expecting a child later this year. She wants to give the child both of our last names with a hyphen, and then later change the child's last name once her and I are married. I wanted to know what actions would need to be taken for this to happen (paper work and cost) as well if there is anyway to prevent this all together and have the child have my last name a birth to avoid the legal steps to do so. I fully intend to marry my girlfriend after I finish nursing school in a year.

Exactly what I was thinking. Get married before baby is born
