We had a car reposted in either 1998 or 1999. We have been notified today that the loan company wants the balance due on the car. We were told that the car was sold, but they did not get the full asking price for the car. We can either pay $2169.00 as a settlement or take our chances and go to court and risk having to pay the full $16,000.00. We stopped making payments on the car when the dealer didn't honor the contract and repair the transmission on the vehicle. We were accident my given the wrong warranty on the car and they would not honor it. The warranty we were given was for a new car not a used one. What can we do? They're saying this happened in 2007 but we didn't have the car then it was already repossessed years earlier!!!

You are being scammed.
Unless you willingly pay there is zero chance they will get a judgment against you as the window for them to do so closed years ago.
Stop communicating with them. Hang up the phone, throw away the mail. If you are ever served any kind of legal summons you will know it, and then you can worry about talking with an attorney.
The more you talk to them and try to reason and explain things, the harder they will try to scam you into paying a debt you no longer owe.
