Can my roomate sue me?

On March 30th my roomate and I got into an argument and I moved out. I called the landlord on the 31st of March and he said he would take me off the lease with no problem. Then I asked him if he could write me something stating that I was off the lease as of March 31st 2008 and he said he couldn't until my roomate signed a new lease. Then my roomate told me he is sueing me for breach of contract unless I pay him $1200. Can he do this? I don't know what to do. I'm scared of being sued and I don't know how to get my landlord to write this for me. My landlord told me not to worry about it because he is not sueing me but I'm still scared beacuse of my old roomate. Please help.
