What does your potential employer say?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that if the state licenses PIs it will require you to obtain a license before acting as a PI. From their website:

Be advised, even if you are located in another state, if you advertise, solicit, sell or otherwise provide any of the services described in Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 62, Chapter 26, or Title 62, Chapter 27 in Tennessee or to Tennessee residents, you may be subject to the requirements contained therein, as well as any rules and/or policies promulgated there under.
