Calif. small claims appeal

In Calif. a Plaintiff is not allowed to appeal a loss in small claims. However, how does a Defendant counter-claim alter this? It is my understanding the plaintiff can appeal a loss on the defendant's claim. Is this true? Does it allow the plaintiff to have their own claim reviewed also? I recently won in both the plaintiff and my own defendant claims, but the plaintiff claims he can appeal!!
