Have you signed a contract?

Even if you have signed a contract you may have some luck if you have not taken possession. The dealer may prefer to cancel the sale then to risk non payment or other troubles down the road.

Have you asked to cancel the sale?

Are you talking about a car, apartment (or what) ........

It seems OP might be talking about something like an apt. (& not a vehicle) since posted in the landlord/tenant law forum.

Oops... I assumed it was a car but just saw the rental category. I guess its a deposit on an apartment. I always look over the new posts without much regard to the categories.

The same still applies as far as the signing of a lease/contract. The sooner another renter is found the easier it should be to get a deposit back. If there is no lease agreement yet then there should not be a problem... unless the landlord is greedy and wants to be difficult, which is very possible.

If it is an apt. (seems so) - agree/concur with mightymoose's answer.
