We are two private individuals collaborating to create a book collection of stories from various people of our acquaintance.

What would be the legal issues involved in this? All stories are guaranteed original and truthful by the submitting parties, anyone concerned in the stories gives their permission to be mentioned, and we assume no responsibility for submissions or their content. The submitting parties are aware of the destination of submissions, and the plan for publication of these stories.

Of what should we be aware during the conduction of this project?

Wow... you really should speak to an attorney. There are so many issues you'll want to think about. What rights are granted by the author? Is it just for publication in the book? Does it include online rights? Does it include further publications or inclusions in other books? Can the content be resold or syndicated to other parties? How are revenues distributed? How about the ability to use names, images and likeness of the authors? Many, many issues are involved with regard to publications and sometimes it seems a joy to live in a simple world!
