I went to a lawyer today for consult on bankruptcy. She said its was not very much debt, 8000.00 for credit cards. I am married but filing by myself. Our income is about 43,000. a year since I lost my job 3 years ago. Is there an amount you have to be in debt before you can file? It may not be much to her but it is too me. She says she will file it though if I want. My income went down to half so theres no extra there and one credit card is suing me now. Please tell me if its worth it.

In short, yes you can!
If you are planning for filing bankruptcy petition you must know the procedure first and take the assistance of a good bankruptcy attorney.

Before the bankruptcy can be filed, you need to take a "credit counseling" course and obtain the "certificate of credit counseling".

Yes, you probably can file. But for $8,000.00, you have to question whether it is worth it. Can you try to negotiate the debt down? Can you get a part time job and pay it off in a year? Make sure you consider your options.
