Property Invasion, Damages, Trespass 9 year olds arrested

My 9 year old son along with two friends where arrested the other day by the Wauconda IL police for playing on a neighbors boat. I know what the boys where doing was wrong and I have delt with it accordingly but my question is, was it normal procedure for the police to photograph and print all the boys and question them for over an hour pertaining to drugs and if they did or knew anyone who dealt with them, without myself or any other parent present.

If they were arrested for trespassing, why were they asked about drugs?

I have no idea. I understand the scare tactic routine for young kids but drilling 9 year olds for information not relevant to the charge, and then processing them prior to telling me they where not "arrested" is hard for me to understand.
