Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft $37 shoplifting

My mother is elderly and walked out of the store with $37 worth of merchandise bc the line was too long. She is taking a lot of antidepressants and painkillers so does not think straight. She was charged with petit larceny and has to appear in court. What is the worse case scenario? This is the first time something like this happened. She lives in VA
