Hi,

I am a 25 year old male who just got engaged to my 21 year old female fiancé. She is premed and will enter medical school after we get married. I do not have any debt but she will take out medical school loans during our marriage. Do I need a prenuptial agreement to protect me from her future medical school debt?

Thanks

You'll need to decide if you require a prenup.

That said, a prenup addresses the distribution of assets if a divorce were to occur.

The debt your spouse acquires isn't normally the responsibility of anyone, other than the spouse who acquired the debt.

Such responsibility is determined by your state of residency.

An Ohio lawyer comments:

Are Your Responsible For Your Spouse's Debt in Ohio?
Generally, the answer is no. However, there are a few situations where you can be held liable for your spouse's debt, or you will be directly affected by it. When any kind of debt is taken out in just one person's name, it is only that person who is liable for the debt. Creditors will try to convince parents and spouses that they are liable for someone else's debt, but if this happens it is generally a lie and you should contact an attorney about possible actions against the creditor.

Maybe she should get a prenup. After all, a professional degree earned during the marriage can be considered a marital asset.

Frankly, I'm not sure why this is a matter of one or the other of you "getting a prenup". Why don't you both develop a mutually agreeable plan to cover the matters you are concerned with? That way it's not an adversarial matter, rather, it is the two of you creating a roadmap for your future together that takes in to account as many of the possible points of contention that you can envision and provides a guide on how those situations should be handled.

Huh, yeah since the post Affordable Care Act aka O'Bama care act came out general practice physicians and even some specialties don't make squat. As a matter of fact some advanced nurse practitioners make more than your run of the mill medical doctor.

I said General Practice doctors not specialists and I would know. Your run of the mill General Practice doctor isn't making anywhere near that. Online salary surveys especially glassdoor et. al. are NOT accurate.
