Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft 1st Offense $5 dollars...what now??

A friend's son was caught stealing a $5 dollar merchandise. The police were called but he says that no arrest was made. They did give him a court date. He is gathering information to determine what's going to happen at court, especially saying that this is his 1st offense. Will he have to pay a fee for criminal court....will he now have a record......will he have to do community service???

He says that he will also have to go to civil court. What kind of fee do you think he'll have to pay for $5 dollars????

He should consult an Attorney and discuss options like Diversion. His court fine will be less than $500.00 along with probation and community service. There may be classes (with a cost) possibly as well. there will be no civil court long as he pays civil demand which should be between $50.00 to $100.00 is my guess
