17 year old child support

ex wife filed for divorce in austin while i was in army(1988)son born1987,ordered to pay child support,taken out of check while in army,discharged when son was 5 y\o,did not know where she was to pay child support,now she wants back child support she turned this over to child support company in austin,son is going to be 21 next month...approx 40,000 dollars in arrears,they said they would settle for less if i made a one time payment of 15,000 dollars help,, what are my oppsions in this,can she do this after so long,just found out she lives in waller county-i live in harris count(texas)trying to enforce origanal order

you should see an attorney. If mom hid the child and you made an attempt to locate her then you might have some sort of defense.
