Today, October 4, is the day we honor Broderick Crawford and his acclaimed TV series Highway Patrol. The show produced 156 episodes and ran from 1955 to 1959. Crawford played Dan Mathews, the head of a police force in a generic state. He drove 1955 and 1956 Buicks made up to look like police cars. In every episode he is seen frequently on the car radio acknowledging communications with "10-4." Hence the selection by fans of October 4th to commemorate the show.

Episodes are available on youtube.

Each year since 2004 the Los Angeles Police Department holds the 10-4 Day parade. Dozens of classic police cars participate. The event often includes appearances by actors who were involved in cop shows.
