    You wouldnt be able to name store if you wanted to. We do not allow naming stores for everyone protection. Since you were not charged with shoplifting your concerns over the theft do not mean much. Depending on state laws the search was likely legal as well.

    You need to start calling lawyers. Many offer free consultations get as many as you can. Talk to them about diverion or similar programs because a theft conviction will likely keep you out of the Navy.

However here is US a retailer may not seek Civil demand (in most states) or even charge criminally if the subjects were allowed to pay for items.     I suggest paying civil demand. since you are not being allowed an Attorney you will be forced to deal with DA yourself. Ask DA if you plead "no contest" and pay a fine that your record can remain clear?

    There may be a store policy that forbids non security people from making shoplifting stops. This would not prevent contacting Police ro Mall Security though

    Mall security could have got them (you said store staff was on phone) or there might be parking lot or store outside cameras

    I cant say how or if they will ID you. I realize you retuerned item but depending on state law that might not matter. If anyone got your plate or if you used a debit/credit card to buy anything you can be IDed

    If the store files a Police report and gives them your license number or any means to ID you the Police can contact you anytime within statute of limitations. By the way you are "never" sure your not seen!
