Hi,

I won a green card in 2006 in the diversity visa lottery. In May 2007 I went to USA to actually claim the green card within the six month window I was given.

Five months after entering USA I realized the job market was about to change for the worse following the subprime crisis especially for my profession which is banking and finance. I left back to my home country in Scandinavia late October 2007 where I started working as a banker right away.

Before leaving I applied for a reentry permit. This is now almost 12 months ago which I find strange because I have contacted immigration authorities several times without receiving an answer.

1. Should I take legal action or is this a normal thing?

US immigration law is a little vague with reentry permits. Theoretically I can go in and out of USA and apply for reentry permit for years and years ahead. However the rules also indicate between the lines that US immigration authorities can do pretty much what they want if they for some reason seen the legal residence status as abandoned even if the applicant follow all formal rules.

2. Will buying US property force the US immigration authorities to renew my reentry permit no matter what?

It Seems to me owning a property is a clear indication of intent to retain permanent residence.

3. Another option is to buy land. But would that constitute intent like owning property?

Thanks,
Lars

This is not legal Advice!

Your quote: Will buying US property force the US immigration authorities to renew my reentry permit no matter what?

I can't see where owning a property in the USA allows someone to have a green flag to enter?? Nice thought though, I would be on the next flight back if it was that easy.

I would be patient, immigration matters take time, if you have done nothing wrong then I can't forsee any problems.

Good Luck
