I live in Raleigh, NC and my apartment was flooded on Thursday due to a main water line in the apartment bustimg after the city worked on water lines. Currently my roommate and I are not able to us the whole downstairs of the house (kitchen, bath etc. ) There are 2 dehumidifiers and 5 fans and the place is sweltering and loud, not to mention our furniture is all moved to one side of the apartment. There is a huge hole in our ceiling and water damage all over, the carpet pad has also been removed. When my roommate and I went to the rental office yesterday to ask them if we would get the days credited to our rent that we couldn't stay there, they said that was not their responsibility. First off there are major repairs that need to be done to the house and we have to live there while it is going on. Isn't it the responsibility of the management company to put us in another apartment or even a hotel? Any help is appreciated...trying to figure out if this is worth pursuing:)

Nope - the water line break is not their responsibility since city caused the damage...you need to notify your renter's insurance and work with mgmt to get the apt DRY so the carpet can be relaid and your furniture placed back in the unit.

If you want to live like a "grown up", you need to realize "grown up" things happen - not everything is your landlord's responsibility
