Public defender reluctant to subpoena evidence

I have been accussed of theft I and theft II. Like most working stiffs, I can not afford a lawyer, so a public defender was assigned to my case. I have had one meeting with him so far, and he was less than helpful. Fortunately there is evidence to prove my case, however when I told my public defender he seemed more annoyed then relieved. I need to subpoena records from 3 different companies and at least 2 eye witness to prove my case. He told me that they would be hard to get and that we wouldn't be able to get them until the day before the trial. I will need to go thru 9 months of financial records for 3 separate companies to find the proof of my innocence, so getting them the day of the trial would be pointless. I need to know if this is true, and if not what can I do to make sure I get the documents I need in time. Thank you for any advice.

As far as I know you can subpoena witnesses on your own. Check your county website to see if there are any forms for download. You can simply fill out the forms and take them to the court clerk. They can send out the subpoena's for you. Also talk to your PD and ask him if he is going to do all that he can for you, Sounds like he isn't. If that's the case then ask the court to assign a new PD to your case. Hope this helps.

i am not a lawyer but i belive once you get in front of a judge you can tell him you are not satisfied with your attorney and would like to fill to receive another one tell him your problem. he has to do something if you have a good reason to fire your appointed lawyer and it sounds like you do
