Problems with 2019 return (deceased spouse)

My most reasonable guess is that it was signed as if my husband was alive (since the information about his passing didn't seem to go through during filing)
If he was not alive at the time it was signed, that means that he couldn't have signed it. Logically, that means that YOU signed his name (electronically). That is where you should have seen a red flag.

I agree I should have seen the red flag however I unfortunately, didn't. If it was saying Type your name, your husbands name, I treated it as I was asked to type the names. Obviously I didn't realize I was SIGNING it like he would do it with his hand. The names of people in the return - typed. This is what I was doing. To be honest, in previous returns, when he was alive, I was doing the same - typing both our names (well, signing). I wasn't inviting him to type his name using keyboard.

The only thing that I am saying is that all the wrongdoing on my side wasn't intentional. I just didn't catch that unlike Turbotax, CreditKarma wasn't taking care of that situation.

You've made contact with the IRS and I suspect everything will soon be okay.

However, if you dislike uncertainty and want to bring this matter to a more rapid conclusion, try the IRS Ombudsman, as in "IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service":

Taxpayer Advocate | Internal Revenue Service

If you put it in writing, keep a copy for yourself, this small matter will soon be addressed to the satisfaction of both parties (Yours and our "gubmint's").

I get it. My wife has never "signed" an electronic return. I have understood, however, that by typing her name, it was the same as signing it. As I recall, it was actually explained fairly well in the instructions.

In any case, this doesn't help you at this point. I won't belabor the point any further.

thank you very much Army Judge, I like the idea.
Yesterday I mailed a letter to the IRS with my explanations (the same address where my mail that confirmed date of death went)
Advocate service sounds like a wonderful idea!

depending on where your "instruction" was. Instruction can be different in different places (shouldn't be different but it may be worded differently)
I went to Credit Karma and started 2021 return just to have some of my questions answered. Again, I did see where they ask whether anyone died in 2020, but I don't see such a question about 2021...it's just not there (or maybe hidden where it's very hard to spot?)

I have used Credit Karma to file. I remember it being VERY clear that each person was supposed to "sign". You, apparently, just missed it.

ok. Do you also remember they were asking to checkmark whether any people in the return have died during the year when the filing is taking place? I wouldn't be surprised if it wouldn't let me submit the return until both names were "signed" (most likely, this would be the case)
Of course, still, the responsibility is on me. I should have caught that they didn't let me checkmark that my husband was deceased at the time of filing (by not asking about it at all) and I should have turned away from their "services"
If you really want to prove a point that Creditkarma did everything right, feel free to go there, start your 2020 return and screenshot where they are asking to checkmark whether someone is deceased in 2021. maybe I am blind.. I will even apologize

I don't want to do anything more - you continued this. I tried to stop at post 24.

Just for clarification, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is not a substitute for the normal IRS processes. Unless the taxpayer is facing some immediate significant hardship such that prompt action is needed or the taxpayer is experiencing trouble in getting a response from the usual process the TAS will not be of much help. As this is being handled by the service center and it appears that the service will act on the matter it's best for now to just wait and see what the outcome of that is. I don't see the TAS stepping in to speed that up here.

thank you. I remember seeing probably in the letter that I received from IRS that after I mail the required paper, the processing time would be 6-8 weeks. Its now past this window. I will wait and see.

It was likely a computer generated letter using the standard wording for how long things take. The problem is that with the covid impact on the agency some things are still taking longer than usual.

I would like to update.
I submitted a required form to the tax advocate service and later left several messages on their answering machine, there has been no reaction from them, it's been probably 1.5-2 months since that. The status of my 2019 return is still the same - being processed. No stimulus payments #2 nor #3
