If Canadian parents have a child who is over 18 in the US (also a Canadian citizen) and has been there for a month (Canadians can stay for up to 6 without a visa), at the border if the parents say their purpose of travel is visiting their child, will the officials ask about the visa status of the child? Or ask why the child is in the US?

If a person is 18 years or older, that person is an ADULT, not a minor!

If you want to KNOW what a Homeland Security Officer, CBP Officer, or immigration Officer asks at border control points; I suggest you ask the proper Homeland Security Official.

Don't expect an answer, as such a question MIGHT spark an inquiry into YOUR life.

ask why the child is in the US?

An 18 year old person is an ADULT, not a minor child.

I suggest you inform the parents NOT to attempt their little scam, border officials these days take "border burglars" and "border burglary" SERIOUSLY.

Thank goodness those dedicated professionals try to keep this country safe!

I never said they were a minor. I said "child" as in, child of the parent. Not as in a literal kid.
My parents aren't attempting any scam.... that was not the question at ALL.

You're missing the point.

Unlikely (because, among other things, there would be no reasonable expectations that the parents would know about their adult child's "visa status"), but we have no way of reliably predicting what some unknown border control agent might ask someone under unknown circumstances.
