Room and board?

Jurisdiction
Georgia
Um yes I would like any help or info you can provide me on room and board situations in GA. I work for a woman who runs an animal sanctuary. My room and board are pay based on me working for her. Her husband has threatened multiple times to kick me out because he doesnt like me. I've lived and worked here for bout 3 years now. They are both listed as owners of the property. He has on multiple occasions entered my house (separated by at least 100ft from theirs) without permission or knocking. I do maintenance and daily care for dogs and cats. Along with mowing their 2 acres and the trash and new construction. I have no issues with the work or with my boss(her). My issues are with her husband. Are there any legal rights I have that would protect me from his threats? Is my situation akin to a verbal lease that would require an eviction notice? Thank you for any and all help.

Generally, when a job includes lodging, the lodging terminates when the job terminates. However, I see some things in the GA landlord-tenant statute that makes me think otherwise in your case.

GA Code 44-7-1 (a) The relationship of landlord and tenant is created when the owner of real estate grants to another person, who accepts such grant, the right simply to possess and enjoy the use of such real estate either for a fixed time or at the will of the grantor.

GA Code 44-7-2 (a) Contracts creating the relationship of landlord and tenant for any time not exceeding one year may be by parol.

(Parol means oral, spoken, unwritten.)

GA Code 44-7-2 (b) In any contract, lease, license agreement, or similar agreement, oral or written, for the use or rental of real property as a dwelling place, a landlord or a tenant may not waive, assign, transfer, or otherwise avoid any of the rights, duties, or remedies contained in the following provisions of law:...

GA Code 44-7-6 Where no time is specified for the termination of a tenancy, the law construes it to be a tenancy at will.

GA Code 44-7-6 Sixty days' notice from the landlord or 30 days' notice from the tenant is necessary to terminate a tenancy at will.

You can read the rest of the statutes at:

2017 Georgia Code :: Title 44 - Property :: Chapter 7 - Landlord and Tenant

Why isn't the wife coming to your rescue?

can you please use easier to understand language? I appreciate your help with this. I just cant understand some of it.he has no right to terminate my job. She does her best to deal with him. But if I'm not wrong I believe you said they have to give me 60 days notice to move. Also if I lose the job I lose the house. Again thank you

.he has no right to terminate my job.

Depends on how involved he is in the business. Does she own and operate the business as her sole and separate property? Is she in control of the business? What is his beef with you?

I believe you said they have to give me 60 days notice to move. Also if I lose the job I lose the house.

The statute makes you a tenant. If the job is terminated they will have to give you 60 days notice of the termination of tenancy. However, during those 60 days you will have to pay rent or you could be evicted sooner for non-payment of rent.

For all the hassle the ahole is giving you maybe it's time to seek employment elsewhere. Word to the wise - don't mix your job with your living arrangements. Work for money and rent yourself a place to live.

The sanctuary is in her and her daughter names only. He has no say in the business. The business however is on their property. The only way I can lose the job is if I quit or all the animals die. Again thank you for your help
