About 2 months ago my friend called 911 on her bf for assult. Or domestic violence. An hour 2 later she called them back and cancelled the report. Is this possible? She said they gave her a confirmation number. I looked up online if a report can be cancelled it said it can't.

Why does she want to "cancel" her complaint?

Why does she want to "cancel" her complaint?

She probably thinks she can drop the charges allowing the abuser to dodge a bullet, perhaps thinking the abuser can get away with pounding her, again.

Just a guess...

Let me restate.

She is free to call the police station back and tell them that everything is peachy and they don't need to respond.

The police are free to either take her at her word or to assume that maybe there is someone holding a gun to her head and respond anyway. Their decision.

But nowhere is she granted the absolute right to rescind her complaint with no possible repercussions.

What? That's not even how it works. Your friend is probably lying to you. The police do not give out "confirmation numbers" on reports.

No you cannot just cancel a report of domestic violence. One can stop cooperating with the police but that doesn't mean the police will stop investigating the accusation. If they can't find any evidence for a prosecutor to file charges, then it may get dismissed. But no "confirmation numbers."

Frankly, if she now claims her earlier report was false, she could (and, maybe, should) be charged criminally.

Wrong. They would have to prove she filed a false complaint. Rarely do you see someone who report domestic violence, then recants it get charged with a false complaint. Domestic violence victims often recant their accusation because of fear or because they are so manipulated by their abuser they think they will change.

It's strange that you say I'm wrong, but then go on to say the same thing I did. I spoke to the possibility, not the overall odds.

Yes, I agree. But that really doesn't have anything to do with what I said now, does it?

So...what was I wrong about?

An hour 2 later she called them back and cancelled the report. Is this possible?

Well...if she did it, then it's obviously possible.

That being said, I have no idea what you mean by "cancelled the report." As a concept, it doesn't make sense, and, without knowing exactly what your friend said to the police, it's difficult to comment.

Yes unfortunately

There were four responses prior to you writing this, and I have no idea which you were responding to.

"Frankly, if she now claims her earlier report was false, she could (and, maybe, should) be charged criminally." --- All of this is wrong. I did not say the same thing you said. You said she could "or should" be charged if she said she made it all up. But that's not true. They will only charge for filing a false complaint if they can prove it. They will not charge anyone who recants a domestic violence accusation unless it's proven to be false. If she simply says "I made it up" they see that all the time because people get scared.

Where did I say the same thing you did? I didn't.

I said "maybe, should". The word maybe is very important.

Feel free to continue, I will step back now. There is no use in arguing with you when we are saying, in essence, the same thing :)
