My friend is 17 years old and female. She has been in trouble ever since she moved away from my neighborhood. We have been talking and she currently would like to leave. Im 19 and female and also live with my mother. She wants to leave but i dont want her to stay on the run till she turns 18 in november. So with all this i want her to move in with my mother and i but her parents wont sign for her to leave. If she went ahead and came to live with us what kind of trouble could be put back on my mother and i for keeping her at our house if her parents decided to freak out about it? I know she can legally leave but i also know that her parents can file reports for amber alerts and such. Im just looking for advice and legal help.

Tell your friend to tough it out until she's 18. Nothing good ever comes of harboring a runaway. Her parent can easily get a restraining order against you and your parents.

Be smart. Mind your own business and stay out of it.

There is a difference between, "She can legally leave" and, "if she leave, law enforcement may not bring her back". The second is true; the first is not.

In all 50 states, the youngest age that one can leave home without consent and be guaranteed not to be dragged back home is 18. (It's even older in a couple of states.) In a few states, and yours is one of them, an anomaly in the law means that law enforcement may be reluctant to return home a 17 year old who is in a safe place and whose parents know where they are. However, May not, is not Will not. Also, the same anomaly means that law enforcement will not interfere if the 17 year old's parents come get her and drag her little ass back home where it belongs. And it is always true that the folks who harbor a runaway can have legal charges placed against them and even go to jail.

So tell Buttercup to suck it up till she turns 18.

No she cannot leave if her parents do not consent her to leave until she turns 18. You and your mother can get in trouble for having your friend there. Gender doesn't matter in this situation either so I'm not sure why it was mentioned.

Maybe she needs to stay out of trouble and stop being a pain in the ass to her parents.

A bit behind the times there, shrinkmaster - the kid is 18 by now and long gone.
