I opened the door to a store . And when I entered I noticed on the door it said if you have a large purse you have to leave it at the counter. Now I understand people steal and there trying to cut down on shoplifting . But I felt very violated . I mean I'm at family dollar ant they want me to leave my 450$ purse with them . Is this legal . I took a picture of the sign. B5CD75E7-1044-47C7-8EEB-DBC0152D49D2.jpeg

What law do you believe exists that says you have to be allowed to take items that could easily be used to facilitate theft into the store?

If you dislike having to check your belongings with someone to shop at a lousy "dollar store", don't patronize that business.

You have a myriad of shopping choices, both online and in person at a brick and mortar store.

You get to choose which store enjoys your custom.

Frankly, I would never spend one penny at a store that posted such signs.

I see the sign as a personal insult, but also as a warning.

What warning?

There are THIEVES and THUGS nearby, stay away!

Which is exactly what I'd do, stay away, shop elsewhere.

The sign on its face isn't illegal.

Good luck.

Ty yes you are right . I was insulted and I am the kind of customers they want . But I will no longer be shopping there . In fact even though it is the closest store to me . They will no longer have my business.

Excellent idea, let them sell their junk to others that want to be ordered around.

You're a free person, and don't have to allow yourself to be treated as if you were a prison inmate.

I suggest you have a word with the management about it. If they stand their ground then go elsewhere.

Regardless, if you go in the store and choose to not leave your bag at the counter all they could do is ask you to leave. It would not be illegal to ignore their silly sign.

Their sign has no legal significance.

Ty yes you are right . I was insulted...

Insulted? By what? Somehow it seems you feel that it's a personal attack on you.

If you want to shop there then carry a small handbag. Or leave you bag up front and just carry your wallet. Or don't show off by going in there with a "$450" bag.

I am a Retail Theft consultant and deal with issues like this daily. This is NOT an uncommon practice to reduce theft and perfectly legal. Its not unlike asking school children to leave backpacks to be held. You can ignore sign and they could ask you to leave or ignore violation of posted policy. You can also shop elsewhere

In case it is not yet clear to you, while I acknowledge that it can be an inconvenience, there is no law prohibiting their having such a policy.

Thank you so much . I had never seen anything like that before . My business is going where maybe there's not a reason for that.
