Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Should I pay the civil demand letter?

I was caught shoplifting at a Kroger in Texas, in the amount of $7. I was not charged or arrested but I was made to sign a paper admitting to the shoplifting, one stating I am banned from the store, and one saying I may or may not receive a letter from a law firm asking for a fee. Should I pay this?

Whether to pay the demand or not is optional. You have no legal obligation to pay it or even acknowledge receipt of it.
It is not a fine. It is a request.

Based on the little information provided I would say the likelihood of anyone ever pursuing you over this is essentially zero. You would first have to be taken to court and ordered to pay. The cost of doing so over a $7 recovery is not reasonable.

If you don't pay you might receive additional threatening letters that can be ignored. Do not ignore any official summons to appear in court (unlikely to ever happen anyway). SunS out io that store and stop stealing.
