HOUSTON (AP) A Houston woman has been arrested on charges that she left her two young children behind in squalid conditions after being evicted from her apartment.

Houston police spokesman John Cannon says 22-year-old Kerri Green was arrested Tuesday and faces two counts of abandoning a child.

Authorities in court records say an apartment complex manager went into Green's apartment on April 23 after she'd been evicted to ensure the unit was empty and clean.

The manager instead found a 2-year-old boy and infant girl alone in a crib amid trash and other debris.

The girl had vomit and mucus on her while the boy was malnourished, "staring into space" and unresponsive to an officer's voice and touch.

Green was no longer being held Wednesday.

A phone listing for her could not be found.

Police: Texas woman left behind children following eviction

I suppose she reasoned that she could just leave them and social services would care for them if they were discovered before they died. They should be found soon....right?

Had this occurred in California, what criminal charges could you have lodged?

As many as I could think of.
This is the sort of thing that inspires me to get out the books and dig up anything that seems to apply even if tangentially.
California sucks at punishing crimes, but it still has crimes.

Child abuse comes in all forms, all colors, all shapes and sizes all ages.

Of course, as do criminals an their crimes.

This one, however, was a new twist on a lease violation; followed by an eviction.

I've read about people leaving garbage and filth when they were evicted and abandoned the premises.

I've see horses left behind, dogs, cats, rabbits, and exotic birds.

I've never seen one child abandoned when the tenant was evicted, much less two tiny babies.

This dummy took stupid and cruelty to a whole new, evil level.
