Forced Abortion on teen

I'm seeking information on a pregnant 14-year old's rights. The girl's mother wants her daughter to have an abortion do the mother bought an abortion pill online. The girl doesn't want to take the pills but the mom has said that she will crush the pills up in her food to make her abort the baby. The mother has threatened the teenager to get an abortion or else the mom will kill her cats & lock her in the house. The mother also will not take the girl to prenatal care. The mother had become physically violent with the girl. Police have been called & told the girl that she can't leave & has to obey her mom. The girl is afraid of the police because the mother told her that the cops can do nothing against her rights as a parent of a teenager. The mother took the girl's phone & told the girl that the cops took it. The mother is also an RN & told the daughter that if anything happens to negatively impact her license, she will personally abort the baby herself. I am a neighbor friend who sneaks the girl food at night because she's afraid to eat the food that her mother makes. What rights does this pregnant 14-year old have to protect her baby & herself?

If I were you, I'd not "sneak" food to any minor child.

You are setting yourself up for some very serious allegations.

Your Nebraska Supreme Court has ruled a 16-year-old girl could not get an abortion because she "was not mature enough to make the decision herself."

The Court's ability to force the teen, a ward of the state known only as Anonymous 5, to carry her unwanted child to term is a direct result of the state's 2011 parental consent law that requires minors seeking an abortion to get parental approval.

Mom Denied Abortion as Uterus Crushes Fetus

An Overview of Minors' Consent Law

A minor in NE can onbly obtain an abortion with parental consent.

Does that mean the mother can force the child to abort the fetus?

I found nothing that supports that approach.

However, the mother should report the fact that her 14 year daughter has been raped, ravished, and sexually penetrated by a male.

It always makes me curious when I learn that any minor child has been sexually assaulted.

It also makes me want to find the perverted, deviant who impregnated a child.

If you believe any child is being harmed, you should report the allegation to the police or child services!!!

As a concerned neighbour your involvement should be no more than reporting what you know or suspect to the appropriate authority.
A report to child services would be sufficient. They have the means to investigate and monitor the girl to make sure she is safe and is not in an abusive environment.

Report what you have been told to child protective services. The police are not the ones to handle this. Mom absolutely can ground the girl, spank her, send her to her room, and take her phone. Mom also does not have to support this baby. As the pregnant mother to be is only 14, she is going to have to think long and hard about how/if she will be able support a baby at such a young age. While her mother has the legal obligation to support her until she turns 18, the same is not true of the baby.

Police certainly would have interest at least initially. Until the circumstances of the 14 year old becoming pregnant are determined to not be criminal it is a common police matter. Once they learn it's not criminal they will disappear fast.
Child services would report it to law enforcement if nobody else already has. These matters typically generate a report from each agency.

The mother cannot make her daughter have an abortion. She can't force her to take an abortion pill. I would call CPS if I was you and report this woman.

Yeah why hasn't anyone looked into who got her pregnant? Was it another teenager her age? An older man? She didn't just have an immaculate conception so where is this male at who impregnated her?

Thanks for your reply. The said father who impregnated the 14 year old girl is the 14 year old boyfriend. When child protective services were called by 2 different agencies (both a pregnant resource center) the report was denied & no investigation happened. The local police department said it was fine for me to feed a neighbor who came to me for food. I did think to cover my bases before I offered assistance to the crying girl on my porch & officers said it was ok.

I thought it odd that no law enforcement officer could explain the rights of a 14 year old girl to her. As a mom of teenage girls, this concerns me.

Unfortunately I couldn't turn a deaf ear to the crying teenage girl on my porch. 2 community agencies (pregnant resource centers) called CPS (child protective services), 2 neighbors & 1 police officer. Since no investigation was started, the police officer assured me there was no crime in offering food & water to the girl if she continued to ask for it. The intake worker that took my call on the hotline simply told me to call back every time the girl came seeking food. I was told that the more calls I made regarding this child, the more they could build a case & open an investigation. It's so frustrating to watch this happen & all the legal advice I can get is basically "turn your head & act like you don't see anything".

The neighbor who is the cop finally called the DA & state patrol. Hopefully something will happen to protect this girl at this point.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, her 14 year old boy friend got her pregnant. His family apparently offered to help but this girl's mother wants no adoption, just abortion. Poor girl comes to my house since she's friends with my daughter.

If they are both 14 it is not a criminal matter unless it was done by force. Police won't have much of a role in this.

No, there is nothing wrong with providing food, but you risk becoming more involved than you will want to be.

If social services has begun a case and did not take immediate action then it is likely circumstances are not as dire as you perceive them to be. They told you correctly- keep reporting your concerns and they will keep checking on her.

As far as the rights of a14 year old, they are few. There are few things she can do without her parents consent.

Well her mother can't force her to have an abortion. If she does something that forces an abortion...that's scary on the daughter's part. I'd be concerned if I was her. I would suggest to my daughter to get an abortion if she got pregnant at 14 but I wouldn't force her.

I thought it odd that no law enforcement officer could explain the rights of a 14 year old girl to her.

Because they are not lawyers and that isn't their job. It would be irresponsible for them to take on that role.

Agreed. A police officer's advice when asked such a question should be nothing more than, "Ask your parents."
