Im not sure what to do, if im even able to do anything at all

Ok, my spouse has a 16 year old nephew who recently, while we were out of town, broke into my spouses parents house, stole money, smoked weed in there house, took their car out for a ride, he brought it back but left the window and doors open the key in the ignition and never turned it off just lifted the hand brake, and also stole my spouses bb gun with co2 air and metal bbs. Im not sure the name of the bbs or bb gun, or how fast it shoots.

My spouse does not want to report it stolen, and im concerned about this since the bbs are hard enough to hurt someone, hes underaged, and he is frequently under the influence.

Please someone help me, if his nephew hurts anyone will it get tracked back to my spouse, will my S. Be in trouble if he doesnt report it, can i report it? Im not sure what to do if i can even do anything at all?

Please someone get back to me asap
 
A bb gun is not a firearm and is not registered like firearms. It is probably not illegal for the kid to have it, although he could do illegal things with it. This is a problem for his parents. If your spouse doesn't want to go through law enforcement then the parents are the best remaining option... Or do nothing. There is no liability here for either of you.

Not necessarily true, this is state dependent. NJ and RI consider them firearms and they are illegal in parts of New York. In New York City you must have a license to possess one. In NY at least, the age factor can also make a big difference.

The OP really needs to provide a state, and if it happens to be New York a county as well.

It is illegal for minors to purchase bb guns, and theyre illegal to carry in public in california.
That's what i got from all the research ive done but if you have a link that says otherwise id appreciate it.

The kid needs help.
If his parents can't help him, I'd get him help as an uncle, even if by marriage.
This kid broke a plethora of laws.
He didn't throw a few eggs on Halloween, he committed felonies!

It seems you already found the relevant laws.
He did not purchase the bb gun. So that is irrelevant.
No adult provided him with the bb gun so there is no issue there either.
It is possible that he could do illegal things with it, but that is not your responsibility.

As mentioned above, the bigger issue is that he apparently broke into his grandparent's home, stole a car and other property.

If nobody wants to address the bigger problem they can just wait for him to get arrested for other things. This is certainly something that can be addressed within the family without law enforcement, but taking no action at all has a way of furthering the problem.

Has anyone spoken to his parents about this? If it's known that he took the bb gun, why hasn't it been retrieved?

So the kid's grandparents don't care that their grandson broke into their house and stole their car? They should have called the cops on that alone.
