Weapons, Guns, Firearms How to find out if I can buy a gun

Hello, sorry for the long story but I have been curious about this for a while now and don't want to pay thousands of dollars to a lawyer to get an answer. When I was 17(in Michigan) I was tried as an adult for manufacturing and attempt to distribute marijuana. I now live in Oregon and am 28. I have friends with government jobs that can't find anything on my record. I did 3 months in jail in Michigan for violating my probation and believe I was convicted. I don't care if the felonys are on my record because I own my own company now and it doesn't matter. But I do care about felons not being able to legally own a fire arm. I just want to know if I can buy a gun, hunt, and get my concealed license? If you could give me any advice on how to obtain information on my situation, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, George

Start with a search of the Michigan court system to see if you can find your case file and then order a copy of complete file:

Case Search

Another potential source of criminal records is the Michigan State Police:

MSP - Criminal History Records

Or, you can find yourself a friendly firearms dealer who can run an instant background check on you to see if anything comes up.

Thank you. I was under the impression that I can get into trouble for applying for a gun while having a felony?

You certainly can get in trouble if you apply to buy a firearm knowing you are a convicted felon.

You must answer a few questions that have you say if you are a convicted felon.

As suggested, you can do a search yourself.
You could have been adjudicated, if you not an adult in juvenile court.
It would be unusual, as most 17 year olds are tried as adults.

Your case was in this century, so I doubt you were adjudicated as a juvie.

It might be best just to forget obtaining a firearm, as it could end up impacting your great life negatively.

That's not what I'm suggesting. I'm suggesting you have a firearms dealer run the instant background check for you without actually applying to purchase a firearm. Hence the reference to "friendly."

Notwithstanding this OP's issue, owning a firearm could end up impacting a person's life quite positively.

Here's one such example of the positive results of owning a firearm:

And here's a tragic example of the consequences of not having a firearm:

Statistics are all over the map but a plethora of surveys indicate that the incidents of defensive gun use per year in the US number anywhere from 100,000 to several million.

In the past 20 years crime rates have dropped in cities and states where gun ownership is encouraged and have risen in places (like Chicago and DC) where draconian gun control laws are in place.

I know all too well the value of a firearm.
I only say POTENTIAL NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES if one applies to purchase a firearm and MISTAKENLY, or UNKNOWINGLY answers a question in the negative, when it should have been in the positive, or vice versa.

The ATF and the other initial agencies are all too eager to persecute weapons related offenses, far more eager than drug abuse violations.

I'd rather be a free man without a firearm, than a man who ends up incarcerated because of a mistake, or some other odd happenstance.

I have nothing against gun ownership, or gun owners.

At one time in my life I collected guns.
I had all types of firearms.
One day I decided to simply give them away.
I only own two toady, an old 10 gauge shotgun given to me by me dad, that has been in our family for decades.
The other is Old Springfield .303 that my dad rebuilt back in the early '50s.

Ditto that.

Nice. Keep them cleaned, oiled, and ready. Better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them. :D

So I have done some research and found that as long as my felony is non violant in the state of Michigan my right to own a gun is immediately restored after finishing prison time/parole/probation. I plan on contacting a lawyer on Monday to confirm this and to see if the felonys are even on my record. I used the website that was mentioned above, payed $10 and nothing came up under my name. I guess my next question is, if the state I got my felony in allows me to buy a gun will Oregon honor that or does Oregon have its own separate rules?

1 - You can bet that Oregon will have its own rules.

2 - You may still be prohibited under federal law.

Do some more research on both counts.
