I've received a letter from a law office asking for my auto insurance information. It states that this law firm was retained to prosecute a claim against me "for property damage arising out of an automobile accident that occurred on 09/xx/13". It looks like they either got my car info by mistake or this is some sort of scam, because I was was not involved in any accident of any kind. There are no signs of any contact or damage on my 6 month old car either. How should I react to this?

Did you report this to your auto ins. company?

You are under NO OBLIGATION to respond to alleged letters from attorneys.

You only need respond to official court documents, ie SUMMONS or SUBPOENA.

If I received such a letter, I'd do NOTHING.

NOTHING, whether I had been involved in an accident or not.

If you are involved in any accident, you are obligated to report it.

You say it didn't happen, then continue to do NOTHING, unless you are sued.

army judge is correct. If you did report it to your auto ins. co. at this time to put them on guard, they would probably just tell you there is nothing you or they can do at this time. So do as AJ said & currently do nothing if there was no accident. Wait & see if it is pursued further.

Thank you AJ and Betty. Agree, I'll do nothing for now, but what to do if they decide to pursue further?

If you get a summons or subpoena, you will need to respond. If you are sued, you will need to go to court. (get a lawyer) I would also report it to your car ins. co. at that time - they "may" help you.

Thank you AJ and Betty. Agree, I'll do nothing for now, but what to do if they decide to pursue further?

Do nothing until you have received official legal documents - subpoena or summons.

Otherwise, an unsolicited letter from a lawyer is simply more spam mail.
