Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Retail Theft Databases

Hello. A few years ago, I got caught up hanging out with a bad crowd and was caught shoplifting at a popular apparel store. I told the truth during my court appearance and received a sealed Disorderly Conduct violation in the state of New York. What this means is that I have to say "Yes" if asked about being arrested, but can legally respond "No" to convictions of crime. I learned my lesson and have moved on, as well as become a mature adult; however, I recognize that this stain in my past can affect my future despite the seal orders over the case.

I've recently graduated college and have been doing a lot of research. I found out that there are many theft databases that exist, where subscribers are able to submit your name for offenses. They are obviously in the right to put my name in database, but I was wondering if there is any way I can confirm whether or not I am on these lists so I know exactly where I stand?

The databases that I came across are NRMA, Esteem, and HireRight. I'm not sure if they use the same database, but would also like to know of any other ones that people here are aware of so I can do further research.

Also, I know that there are people on here who have connections to people who access or have worked with these databases and it would be great if I can confirm whether or not a specific retailer is part of the member list? I'm not entirely sure if this is something I'm allowed to ask, and apologies if not.

I'm very confused as to whether I was even included because I was very distraught at the time and stupidly signed paperwork by the LP officer without fully understanding it. In some instances, I know that they make you sign an agreement not to come back to the store. And also that if you are included in a theft database, that you should receive a letter in the mail. I don't recall ever receiving anything, so I don't even know if I should worry but I want to know everything that I can about this matter.

Thanks so much and I apologize for the rambling.

Who subscribes and uses these databases are closely guarded by both the databases and the retailers. I have some contacts who know who these retailers are. It would be unwise to name the retailer on public forum but I can help you send me a PM or email and I will help you

I actually saw some of your posts on here and would love to take you up on that offer. I can't seem to figure out how to send a PM on here.. could you possibly send me one and I will reply to that with the necessary info?

You have that function blocked I would guess. Here is an email address to get what you need just tell person Shrinkmaster gave

Please, no email addresses on publicly viewed threads. It is for your safety and protection.

Thank you. May I ask how this person is able to view the database? And also I assume this insider has new information and is not working from an old subscriber list or anything? And which databases does this person check?

This is a great help to me and I hope it will allow me to better understand what I can expect and how to continue moving forward. :)

Being a Retail theft professional but not working for any single retailer grants our group access to many aspects of retail theft others cannot or are not allowed to. We work as consultants so we have no allegiance to any one person or company. What we will tell you is if the retailer who caught you subscribes to any of these databases. That info will tell you whether or not your in there

I have just sent an e-mail to the address you gave me with the retailers name and am awaiting a reply.

Do you know if it's also possible to ask if you are on the database from these companies themselves? i.e. personal background check?

We do not need these databases for our work and if we did it might be unethical given who some of our clients our

Oh, let me clarify. I meant, is it possible for ME to inquire if I am in the database from the companies who run them, once I get confirmation of the retailer being a member?

And, if the retailer is not a member of the more popular/comprehensive databases, would I be "in the clear" in a way? I know that the specific retailer probably has a profile on me in their system.

Only subscribers can access that info. I can tell you that if the retailer is a subscriber than there is a 99.9% likihood your name is there long as retailer got your name at time of incident

It is very kind of your team to provide this info and allow people like me to be more informed. I am hoping for the best (that they are not a subscriber), but am glad for the opportunity to know if they are so I can stop going back and forth.

My situation aside, I think that database like these are helpful; however, I wish that they were more lenient about putting names of people who were not ultimately convicted or received a deferred sentencing. I have read stories of people who were wrongfully accused and had no charges, but who are on the database and having a hard time finding jobs because of it. In my case, I deserve it.. but it's a shame to see that happen to those who did not commit the acts.

Yes, I have and unfortunately the company is part of the database! It sucks, but it is what it is. I feel much better that I have a concrete answer and will be able to prepare myself. It will be harder to land a job in my field, but I will stay positive and accept the consequences.

In regards to these databases, the NRMA has a 7 year policy. Is this thoroughly enforced?

Discuss that with person you are in email contact with. FYI only other NRMA subscribers can view the contents of database so depending on your chosen field and company it might not be as bad as you think

Well, the problem is my degree is working in the fashion industry and, as such, the positions I most qualify for are retailers or companies who deal with retailers. As you can probably guess, this issue is kind of hanging over me and affecting my confidence in applying for jobs. The only good thing is that my specialty does not involve handling cash/money, but more so technical aspects.. so perhaps I may get a chance from an employer who is willing to overlook this mistake.

I wish I could advise all those teenagers out there not to do stupid things like this, as it will be a burden on your future!

Actually you can contact person I gave you and talk to him how you can do that. Another thing you can do is check with us on some of your target retailers and ask if they belong to NRMA. We can research this and give you result of that research
