I made a very stupid mistake that could be very detrimental to my future. I was caught shoplifting at a school bookstore in February $40, and I haven't been arraigned yet. I got arrested again last week for the same violation for $89! I don't even know why I did it. I am so ashamed and scared of what will be happening to me in court. Will I be going to jail? I have contacted an attorney to seek advice. What are the chances that this can be resolved without jail-time?

There are people who steal food because they're hungry and don't want to go to the soup kitchen and get beat up by hobos. The law doesn't always sympathize. If you steal books for school, they'll probably say you should know better because you're in school.

So what should I do? I already know that it was stupid. Should I hire a lawyer? Is there a good chance that I will go to jail? Should I plead guilty or not guility?

Find out if your jurisdiction has pre-trial diversion or deferred adjudication for first offenders. You may need a lawyer to secure that for you, and a lawyer will always try to get you the best outcome. Look for a lawyer that will give you a free consultation. You will get advice, and you might find that hiring the lawyer will be the easiest and the best option despite the fee. It's an expensive mistake, but getting all the legal help you can get now can help minimize its impact on your future.

Thank you for your reply. I have gotten free consultation from a lawyer, but how do I know that he's not just after my money. He said that the best possible outcome out of this would be probation, community service, and house arrest. Does that seem plausible?
