Many many moonlights ago, I had an AT&T cellular phone. At the time, they were using your main (day) minutes before applying your free minutes. There was even a class action suit a couple of years ago because of this. I tried at the time to explain to them they had miscalculated my minutes but to no avail. My bill stood at about $600. I never paid because I knew I didnt owe them anything close to that. Now, like 5 years later, the collection agency that now owns my debt has put it on my credit report, and it is really hurting me. Is there anything I can do? Thanks...

I'm wondering if the statute of limitations has expired on the collection. When was the debt due? If it's not within the statute of limitaitons, my advice would be to settle as the collections agency will likely take less and the whole problem can go away on a debt that you know you owe -- plus collection fees. This is something you should have taken care of with AT&T. Tell the collection agency that this is a bill that you unquestionably dispute and there is no way it should have been $600 and see if they come back with a counteroffer. If they do, you know that you have some leeway. Good luck to you!!!!!

If I do that, then I end up extented the period of time they have to collect.....I tried to dispute with AT&T to no avail....What I really want to know is if they just put this on my credit report...does it expire within 7 years of the inital bill or from the time they put it on the report.
