You're in the clear. Take a diagram / pictures to the judge and explain it. Look up the relevant codes. Do a google search for more advice. I am assuming california law.
Explain that to the judge. dress well and speak politely. If the cop is an oaf the judge may well look kindly on you.

actually, you only have to signal if someone's there. CVC 22100. Look it up. I think someone has to be within 100 ft behind you, and reasonably affected.

if it's obscured, private road oir not, you can claim that it was obscured and therefore a mistake of fact. At least in california you can. I suspect there's a similar statute in BC.
Also, I suspect it's not a legal sign but you'll have to do some research on that.
