I'm in California. I have consulted with a few attorneys but I am just not able to hire them. They mentioned I would get a public defender but I am unsure about this whole situation. How long does the investigation usually take before a police officer would try and get in touch with me.

Also, I tried doing some consultations with some criminal defense lawyers but I am a full-time student...

I bought some items from work that I really couldn't afford... I ended up returning them on the register without the items. The total was about 180. I got let go the other day and re-embursed the company but they said they were going to press charges and file a police report. I don't know what...
