Intellectual Property Law

Intellectual Property Law refers to original creations and inventions using a persons mind. Copyright, trademark and patent are the most common forms of intellectual property. The Federal Government provides a limited amount of time for the creator or inventor of the property to exclusively exploit his or her creation finanically and be provided protection from the use and exploitation by others without authorization. The intangible assets which are able to be protected under Intellectual Property Law include music, literary, artistic and visual works (copyright), discoveries and inventions (patent); and words, phrases, symbols and designs used in commerce (trademark). Trade Secret Law is also included within the general scope of Intellectual Property Law.
