Employment and Labor Law governs the relationship between the employer and employee, including individual work agreements performed by independent contractors. Statutes cover labor unions and collective bargaining, work wages and hours, health and safety conditions, protection from discrimination in the workplace and workers compensation. Federal statutes have also been enacted to protect workers and regulate the workplace such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act), Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and FMLA – the Family and Medical Leave Act.
