I was told not to sign at hospital for spouses treatment unless i sign "As agent for" and this keeps me from being responsible for debt is thiss correct??

It is best that you do note that you are acting as the agent of (for) spouse when signing to avoid accusations that you signed on your own behalf & not your spouses. However, that doesn't mean that a medical provider might not try getting payment from you. It helps protect you though. The spouse being treated should sign if possible.
