Hi, I was recently arrested for shoplifting from Walmart. I went throughout the store and put items in my purse when about half way through i realized i didn't want to steal this stuff so i shoved it all in a purse in the store on a shelf. I did not intend on coming back for it, I just wanted to get out of the store. On the way out, I didn't think anyone was watching me so I grabbed a magazine and a stick of gum. After leaving the store, the security stopped me and took me into a room and searched me. They didn't find anything but the gum and book which totaled out to about 6-7$. They went and grabbed everything in the bag that i had shoved in there and charged me with stealing it. It equaled out to 140$. They want to send me a civil demand letter asking for double to triple the amount of 140$. Can they charge me for this amount even if I didn't steal those items from the store?
