I am being sued and I just found out I had a lapse in insurance coverage during that time. I may have to represent myself. The summons doesn't specify the amount of damages. Can I hurt my case by contacting the attorney of the person suing me?

There's no reason for you to contact the opposing party's attorney prior to trial.

If one in the know did make contact with the opposing attorney, there's very little harm that could come of such contact, unless you did something very stupid.

Depends on what you say to him.

Before you do that maybe you can explain a few things.

1 - What court level?
2 - Does the summons require you to file an answer?
3 - Deadline for the answer?
4 - Date you were served?
5 - Summarize the allegations listed in the Complaint.
6 - What were the circumstances surrounding the injury? Auto? Home?
7 - Why did your insurance lapse?
