Cash purchase, sorry, just reread your post. I don't think there is much they can legally do to you... Do you have the title in your name?

I work at a reputable dealership, and hear of dealer scams all the time, but this is a slightly different twist on the spot financing scam, it seems... what paperwork did you sign regarding the sale of your car? Likely one that said the current mileage was accurate to the best of your knowledge...
(In Ohio, at least) One of the many papers you sign in the finance office states that you have or will get full insurance on the vehicle. Shame on them for not explaining it properly, but shame on you, unfortunately, for not reading what you signed, or asking if you were unsure... :(

The dealer may have let you buy the car, but you signed at least one, probably more like four, papers stating you had/will get insurance.

I work at a dealership, army judge, as usual, is spot-on! There is a reason you sign so many documents, they are all needed! Don't do any more business with bullies, and tell your friends to shop elsewhere!

The limitations of CarFax and AutoCheck are that they only contain incidents that are reported. My dealership inspects all vehicles thoroughly, even a clean history report does not prove that a previous owner, or even the dealership, repaired damage from an unreported accident or damage...
There is no contract between you and him, legally, i think. You would have to have any contract signed by a notary. Take your deposit back, and look for another car...
