I was convicted of Petty Larceny (shoplifting) back in 2001 which I served for 7 days in jail.
Will this cause rejection of my citizenship application? I'm currently a permanent resident and married to a U.S. citizen. I read somewhere that if you wait 5 years (3 years if married to a citizen), your misdeomeanour or petty record won't provoke the citizenship application. Is that true? Am I still eligible to get the citizenship?
Your help is much appreciated.

based on what i have read your case will have to fall on a petty theft exemption meaning the it consist of one CIMT and the sentencing is not more than a year or jail time of less than 6 months. I think other lawyers would suggest that you wait 5 years or 3 years if you are married to a a US citizen if you have a conviction...thats like a safe haven ... make sure you consult an immigration lawyer before you go and apply and see what you need to do. Goodluck and please update us on what happens.
