Adult child disabled, institutionalized, who gets tax exemption?

Our adult daughter is now institutionalized and the County is applying for Disability for her. After Disability payments start, we will be paying the difference up to what her care costs. May we take her as our dependent for tax purposes next year, even if our contribution might not be more than half her costs (Disability might pay more than we do)?

You might run it by a tax accountant. Even if you can't claim her as a dependent, there might be some type of deduction you can take for what you do pay toward her "care".

Someone else here may come along with some additional info for you.

There is no easy answer to your question.
I suggest you contact the IRS and/or your state's taxing authority.
Even they won;t say yes or no.
They'll give you some rules to read, lots, and lots of rules.
If I were you, I'd avoid even trying to claim an adult child on your taxes, unless you are her legal guardian.
In many cases, even that is tricky.
