Thank you for this forum!!
If anyone has advice on this question I would appreciate the help.

My step father and mother were married for 25 years.

My mother died 3 months ago. Then my step father died just two days ago.

My step father had no biological children.

My step father didnt have a trust, just a simple statutory will that left everything to us step kids.

My step father had a large IRA and a large Pension.

My on the IRA and Pension my step father named distant relatives of his as the beneficiaries (before he met our mother)

Question: Under California law; as direct descendants of our mother who was married to our step father for 25 years - are we entitled to any of those assets?

Only the named beneficiaries are paid on life insurance policies, IRA accounts, pension payouts, etc...

You aren't a named beneficiary, you have no interest in said payouts.

Agree, payment goes to beneficiaries named. He would have needed to change the beneficiaries if he wanted someone other than originally named.
