I have been married and have 5 children with my wife. I just received notice of a child support action. A call to my local child support enforcement office says it is for a 17 year old child whom I did not know about. What should I do first? Am I responsible for 17 years of support for a child I did not know existed?

You should first contact teh agency that sent you the notice.
The first thing you should investigate is how were you tagged as the daddy?
Was a DNA test conducted?
Did you voluntarily establish paternity (or did someone FORGE these documents)?
Ask for any and all proof that indicates you are the putative papa!!!!!

Then you wait for the response.
This could be the start of some vindictive action by a spurned lover.
It could be a scam to collect money out of you.
It might be some long forgotten and unremarkable liaison that resulted in a pregnancy.
That alone doesn't mean you're the putative papa.

So, work to discover all that you can about this action.
Your initial response should be to deny, deny, deny.
Then ask for a DNA test to be conducted.

Don't assume anything until things have been proven.
It has been my experience that some women lie about paternity.
They point their crooked finger at a respected, working target.
They have done that to quell the questions of their family and friends.
They also do it to quiet the child who wants to know, "Mama, who my daddy?"

You might also wish to consult with an attorney in your area.
The initial consult is free.
You'll also learn much more about how these sorts of actions work in your state!!!!
