My mother works for Wal-Mart, part-time. She is having knee surgery soon. She has told me that Wal-Mart does not offer short-term disability to part-time employees. What are her options for generating enough income to pay her living expenses for the 6 wks she will need for recovery. Would she qualify for worker's comp, food stamps, unemployment, temporary disability from the Federal or TN state government?

Sorry, she would qualify for possibly one of the above.

Whatever you do, do it now.
Some of those programs have very LONG decision cycles!!!

She might be able to get some food stamps.
She might also be able to get some welfare payments, rules vary from state to state.
Ask and see what happens.

Hey, here's a novel idea.
She's your beloved mother:angel, why don't YOU help her!!!!

1. Worker's Comp does not apply unless the injury was job-related. Was it? And if so, did she file a claim?

2. Unemployment benefits are only available if the individual is ready, willing and able to work.

3. Food stamps or other assistance, maybe. She can contact the county public assistance office.

4. Agree with ArmyJudge, her children!
