Can I make movie my own movie posters?

Hi...
If I make re-makes of movie posters from classic movies using my painted interpretations of characters and the movies title and credits (actor, director, etc.) can I be sued if I sell them as prints? Are the characters themselves trademarked?

Yes the images themselves are copyrighted. You can not use the images or the names of the movies without permission.
