Stop Payment On Check

I wrote a check to a friend in Florida for $50.00 and mailed it to him.
When I mailed it my bank account had money in it. But by the time he got it my bank account was overdrawn by accident and I had to stop payment on the check, and close that bank account. Even though I told him that, by the time he got my message, he had already gone to a check cashing store and cashed it. The check cashing store has called me and I told them my bank account was overdrawn and I had to take the actions I took. Now they are calling me and want the $50.00 and threatened to get the police involved.
I live in Pennsylvania and my friend lives in Florida.
Does anybody have any answers?

Thank you!

Pay them the $50. Realistically, they shouldn't have cashed it without ascertaining that you had the funds to cover it, but they did, your friend got the benefit of it, and you would have had to pay if you hadn't been overdrawn.

Or ignore them. If they want to try coming after you from halfway across the country for $50, they can fill their boots.
