Cancel Credit Card for Deceased Person

A friend has recently lost her husband who was self employed. She is trying to cancel his business credit card and was told that she needs to send the bank a copy of his death certificate. She is able to use the card as an "employee" but was not listed as a co-signer initially. She is hesitant to send a copy of the death certificate for fear of identity theft because of the personal information thereon. First, is a copy of the death certificate necessary in canceling a credit card; and second, is there danger of identity theft in providing such documentation to the bank?

They MUST have a copy of the death certificate-- they must verify he is really deceased-- they can not take a phone call as verifying he is dead-- and if she uses that card it is considered fraud unless she is a signer and responsible for repayment of that money--

Thank you for the info. What I meant to say was that she had a card in her name as an "employee" so she was not using it fraudulently, but she was not an originator of the account so she could not close it even though he was her husband.
