Stolen Artworks Theft or Civil Case

This all starts back in May2008. My boyfriend and I were living in a bad situation with a roommate and needed to move. I did not want to put my artworks into a storage unit as they are worth about 10,000. I could not take them to the place we were going to stay. A friend of ours (call her V), and of our future roommates (call her D), offered to let us put them in her house for storage and to ensure the safety of them. We accepted and i paid V with an artwork of lower value. I paid V as they belonged solely to myself. We lived with D for 2 mos. and moved into our own place on Aug 1st. Well after a week my boyfriend and i had broke the relationship and are no longer in contact. Also note that my boyfriend was solely responsible for all the finances and financial agreements and that i was not privy as to what they were. Apparently D and he had some sort of financial strain between them.
I had no phone number for V but wanted to get my artworks back as agreed.
I tried calling D to get V's phone number but she won't return my calls. Finally around monday of this week i got V's work number and called her there. She was very short with me and wouldn't give me her phone numbers. She had said they were disconnected (1st of many lies told to me) she can't talk and will call later. This went on for 3 days and i finally got her phone number(never disconnected), as i became suspicious as to her and D's behaviour, and asked her outright if she had all my artworks to which she replied all but one. I was outraged and asked where the one was. she had told me that she had been at D's house at a party and that everyone there including D had said that i was going to give her the painting, which was never told to her or anyone, and also that D wanted it because my ex-boyfriend and her had some sort of financial dispute. Now prior to this happening D and V were well aware of the fact that he and i had broke up and were not communicating on any level. I told her it was not so and what right did she have to let them come and steal it from my storage area in her house. After some silly banter she agreed that she should not have but that it was too bad it was not her problem and that i will have to deal with D if i wanted it back. I told her that was impossible as she won't return my phone calls since the day before it was stolen and that i wanted to come and get my artworks this weekend and that she had better go and get it back as she was never authorized by me to give or let anyone steal it. She refuses to get it back as somehow its not her problem. Can i have it reported stolen and if so who should i name as the persons who have stolen it Both V and D? If i can't report it stolen then how do i get it back? It has been appraised at $2000.00. I should mention i have receipts as well as appraisals, photos, and registrations on all the art works. Also should i have the police escort me to get the rest back as well? I have a feeling this could become a very bad situation. Help Please...
Thank you, Lorenz
